Even if well represented in Austria, the industrial tourism attractions (heritage, factory tours) aren't usually underlined in the general touristic promotional materials. Austria has a strong economy with machinery, metallurgical products and textiles being of particular importance. However, the country's most important industry is tourism. A big part (70%) of the internal energy comes from renewable sources such as water, wind, biogas.
The heritage is mostly linked to the Austro-Hungarian Empire (1867-1918), a factor of technological change, accelerated industrialization and urbanization. The Austrian car production started in 1897. The first airplane in Austria had its maiden flight in the vicinity of Gorizia in 1909. The locomotive (steam engines and wagons, bridge and iron structures) factories were installed in and around Vienna since 1839. Rail transport expanded rapidly in the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Its predecessor state, the Habsburg Empire, had built a substantial core of railways in the west, originating from Vienna, by 1841. Steam trams appeared in the late 1860s. The electrification of tramways started from the late 1880s.
